Record the reading in the required transaction material.
4Seller and buyer entries
Follow the labels printed on the actual title.

If the title is missing, says “Nontransferable,” shows an unresolved lien, or the ownership chain is unclear, stop and contact DMV.

Record the smog handoff
For a standard private sale, BAR says a vehicle that requires Smog Check must have passed within the last 90 days and the seller should give the buyer the inspection report.

Record the odometer
Capture the reading at the sale and record it in the applicable official transaction material.

Complete the handoff
Use this beside the vehicle. Confirm what happened; do not upload driver-license images.

Submit the NRL with DMV
California DMV says the seller must notify DMV within five calendar days. CloseMyCar does not submit the NRL.
